Rotary Club La Valette Hosts Elegant Wine Tasting Evening with Attard & Co. Food Ltd.

On the evening of 29th July 2025, members of Rotary Club La Valette, Malta, gathered for a refined and educational Wine Tasting Event hosted by Attard & Co. Food Ltd., one of Malta’s leading purveyors of fine wines and gourmet products. Held at their premises, the event welcomed 15 Rotarians and friends for an evening of discovery, camaraderie, and exceptional wine.
The tasting was led by John Bugeja, Wine & Beverage Manager at Attard & Co., whose deep knowledge and passion for viticulture set the tone for an engaging and memorable experience. In his welcome address, John shared the company’s wine philosophy:

We curate wines that reflect the true character of their terroir, working closely with passionate producers who share our commitment to excellence. Spotlight on Simonsig Family Vineyards
The evening’s tasting agenda featured a curated selection from Simonsig Family Vineyards, a pioneering South African estate located in Stellenbosch. Founded in 1968, Simonsig is celebrated for producing South Africa’s first Cap Classique sparkling wine, Kaapse Vonkel, in 1971. Still family-run, the winery is renowned for its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and craftsmanship.
Wines Presented
Guests were treated to five distinct wines, each showcasing the versatility and elegance of Simonsig’s portfolio:
- Kaapse Vonkel Brut
A crisp and elegant Cap Classique with fine bubbles and refreshing notes of green apple and citrus zest. - Sauvignon-Semillon
Fresh and vibrant, this blend offered bright citrus and gooseberry aromas with a soft, rounded finish. - Chardonnay
Rich and creamy, featuring ripe stone fruit, subtle oak, and a smooth, balanced palate. - Tiara
A bold Bordeaux-style blend, layered with dark berries, spice, and refined tannins. - Gewürztraminer
Aromatic and off-dry, bursting with lychee, rose petals, and exotic spice.
Perfect Pairings & Fellowship
Each wine was thoughtfully paired with specially prepared nibbles designed to enhance its unique profile. Following the tasting, attendees enjoyed a generous platter of cheeses, salamis, and dips, encouraging lively conversation and fellowship among Rotarians and guests.
