Marriott Hotel, St Julians, Malta

The Governor, District Secretary and Club Board members together with Hospice CEO

Rotary Club La Valette welcomed District Governor Sergio Malizia during his annual institutional visit to Malta. The program included a tour of St Michael’s Hospice, presentations on future Rotary initiatives, recognition of outstanding service, and discussions on fundraising and youth engagement. The visit strengthened fellowship and highlighted Rotary’s impact in Malta.

Governor’s Institutional Visit to Malta

Every year, the Governor of District 2110 (Sicily and Malta) visits Malta to meet members and review the work of local Rotary clubs. This annual occasion is a highlight for Rotary Club La Valette, offering both fellowship and an opportunity to showcase projects that embody Rotary’s values of service and community impact.

Visit to St Michael’s Hospice

On Saturday, 13 December, District Governor Sergio Malizia, accompanied by District Secretary Michelangelo Gruttadauria, was welcomed by Assistant Governor Michael Balzan, President Clare Vassallo, Treasurer David Dingli, and President Elect Annemarie Bianchi. Together, they visited St Michael’s Hospice in Santa Venera, a palliative care home established through a Rotary Global Grant. Over 1,000 patients receive free treatment each year thanks to volunteers. Originally a joint initiative with Rotary Club Malta, the project has been carried forward in recent years by Rotary Club La Valette.

Evening Presentations and Recognition

Later that day, members gathered at the Marriott Hotel’s theatre for an exchange of presentations. Governor Malizia outlined his priorities for 2025–26, including increasing membership, strengthening contributions to the Rotary Foundation, and establishing Rotaract and Interact clubs to nurture youth involvement. He also highlighted his wife’s project on “Pet Therapy.”

During the evening, Bryan Sullivan was honoured for his dedication to Rotary’s principles. The award, inscribed in Italian, expressed gratitude for his constant commitment and exemplary values. The words on the award state “Rilasciato a Bryan Sullivan. Persona sempre disponibile, vero rotariano di profondi valori. Sincera gratitudine per il costante impegno e l’esempio che offri a tutti noi”. This translates into: Issued to Bryan Sullivan. Always available person, true Rotarian with profound values. Sincere gratitude for the constant commitment and example you offer to all of us.

President Clare Vassallo presented an overview of the club’s achievements and upcoming projects. At the same time, Robert Ghirlando of Rotary Malta shared reflections on the recent visit of Italian Rotarians to Rome for an audience with Pope Leo. The evening concluded with a buffet dinner, fostering fellowship among members of Rotary Club La Valette, Rotary Club Malta, and Rotaractors.

Institutional Meeting and Future Plans

On Sunday, 14 December, the Governor and Secretary held an institutional meeting with club leaders. Assistant Governor Michael Balzan reported on membership and attendance, while Treasurer David Dingli outlined fundraising and contributions to the District, the Rotary Foundation, and the Polio Fund. President Clare Vassallo highlighted the club’s recent donation to the University of Malta’s RIDT ALS Research program, supported by a District Grant. She also announced upcoming fundraising events, including a quiz night and a New Year’s cocktail gathering.

Governor Malizia commended the club’s efforts while encouraging further initiatives, such as youth exchange programs and the establishment of a Rotaract Club at the University. He pledged District support for a new Global Grant. He invited Maltese Rotarians to participate in cultural and musical events in Sicily, culminating in the District Congress in Palermo in June 2026.

Closing Fellowship

The Governor’s visit concluded with a light brunch attended by board members, marking the end of a successful and inspiring institutional visit.
