In RY 2021-2022, the Club supplied insect screens at St Paul’s home in Hamrun, Malta. This is a retirement home for the elderly run by The Little Sisters of the Poor. The awareness that Malta has an ageing population gave rise to the idea. This was further enhanced by the fact that during the COVID-19 Pandemic, their windows needed to be kept open. Open windows also meant insects, particularly mosquitos, had to be kept out, as insect bites can cause extensive difficulties with older people. Club Projects typically also include a certain amount of hands-on service done by Club members. However, given that COVID-19 restrictions were still in and social distancing enforced within the home, it was significantly, if not practically impossible, to carry out any extensive service apart from helping the insect screen manufacturer to transport and mount the screens in all the bedrooms. This project was partially funded by Rotary Club Malta and Rotary Club Vittoria (in Sicily). Rotary Club Vittoria members travelled to Malta in April 2022 to visit the home with RC Malta and see the project completed.
