Rotary Club La Valette marked the Feast of St Lawrence with a special Mass at Birgu’s historic parish church, presenting a fully restored 18th-century manuscript from the Santo Uffizio Cartolaro collection. The event highlighted Rotary’s commitment to preserving Maltese cultural heritage and fostering community through service and historical stewardship.

On Saturday, 9th August 2025, members of Rotary Club La Valette gathered at the historic St Lawrence Parish Church in Birgu to commemorate the Feast of St Lawrence, a deeply rooted celebration in Maltese tradition. The event was not only a spiritual occasion but also a proud moment for the club, marking its contribution to the preservation of Malta’s rich cultural heritage.

The Feast of St Lawrence and the Church of Birgu

The Feast of St Lawrence is one of the most revered religious celebrations in Malta, particularly in Birgu (Vittoriosa), where the Collegiate Church of St Lawrence stands as a beacon of faith and history. St Lawrence, a deacon martyred in Rome in 258 AD, is venerated for his humility and unwavering commitment to the poor. His feast day is celebrated with solemn Masses, processions, and community gatherings that reflect centuries of devotion.

The St Lawrence Parish Church, located in the heart of Birgu, is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and a spiritual cornerstone for the community. It also houses an extraordinary archive of historical documents, including the Santo Uffizio Cartolaro manuscripts, which offer a rare glimpse into ecclesiastical and civic life in 18th-century Malta.

Restoration of Santo Uffizio Cartolaro Volume VII P2

In line with Rotary’s commitment to service and cultural stewardship, Rotary Club La Valette sponsored the full restoration of Volume VII Part 2 of the Santo Uffizio Cartolaro, dated 1793–1797. This volume is part of a 17-volume collection of manuscript documents written in iron-gall ink on watermark-bearing paper, compiled by various scribes and preserved in the archives of the Collegiate Church of Vittoriosa.

The restoration was meticulously carried out by Valentina Lupo of Atelier del Restauro, whose expertise ensured the preservation of the volume’s integrity and historical value. The project reflects Rotary’s dedication to safeguarding Malta’s documentary heritage for future generations.

Mass and Symbolic Presentation Ceremony

Rotarians were invited to attend a Mass presided over by Archbishop Ġorġ Frendo, held at the Collegiate Church of St Lawrence. The liturgical celebration was followed by a symbolic presentation ceremony, where ex-President Godfrey Swain and Treasurer David Dingli formally handed over the restored manuscript to Parish Priest Dun Karm Busuttil. The moment was flanked by restorer Valentina Lupo, highlighting the collaborative spirit behind the initiative.

Reception and Archive Tour

Following the ceremony, attendees were warmly welcomed to a reception within the church complex, offering a chance to reflect, connect, and celebrate the occasion. Rotarians also had the unique opportunity to tour the Chapter Hall and Archives, gaining insight into the historical treasures housed within the church and the importance of their preservation.

Rotary’s Role in Cultural Preservation

Rotary Club La Valette continues to champion projects that honour Malta’s cultural legacy. From restoring historical manuscripts to supporting educational and humanitarian initiatives, the club remains committed to “Service Above Self”, enriching both the local community and the broader heritage landscape.

This event stands as a testament to Rotary’s enduring values—fellowship, service, and respect for history—and reinforces the club’s role as a guardian of Maltese identity and tradition.
