Rotary Club La Valette, in collaboration with volunteer Marina Ciarlo’, provided essential food and hygiene supplies to the Ukrainian Refugee Centre in Ta’ Xbiex. This initiative supports over 8,800 displaced Ukrainians in Malta under the EU’s Temporary Protection Directive, reinforcing Rotary’s humanitarian commitment to dignity, solidarity, and practical aid.

Rotary Club La Valette recently undertook a heartfelt initiative to support Ukrainian refugees currently residing in Malta. In collaboration with dedicated volunteer Marina Ciarlo’, the Club organised a targeted shopping effort on the 23rd October, to provide essential supplies to those in need. A variety of food items and hygiene products were purchased and delivered directly to the Ukrainian Refugee Centre in Ta’ Xbiex, which serves as a vital hub for community support and integration.

This humanitarian effort comes in response to the ongoing displacement caused by the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. As of August 2024, Malta has welcomed approximately 8,843 Ukrainian refugees under the European Union’s Temporary Protection Directive. This directive grants eligible individuals the right to reside in, work in, and access social services in host countries. While these protections offer a lifeline, many refugees continue to face challenges, particularly in securing stable employment and navigating a new cultural and linguistic environment.

The Ukrainian Refugee Centre in Ta’ Xbiex plays a crucial role in addressing these challenges. It offers not only logistical support—such as assistance with documentation and housing—but also emotional and social resources to help individuals and families rebuild their lives. The Centre fosters a sense of community and dignity, providing a safe space for refugees to connect, share experiences, and access guidance.

Rotary Club La Valette’s contribution is part of its broader commitment to service above self. By responding to urgent needs with practical support, the Club exemplifies the Rotary spirit of compassion, solidarity, and global citizenship. This initiative also reflects Rotary’s ongoing dedication to peace and conflict resolution, aligning with its international mission to promote understanding and goodwill across borders.

The Club extends its gratitude to Marina Ciarlo’ for her tireless efforts and to all members who contributed to this meaningful cause. Rotary Club La Valette remains committed to supporting vulnerable communities and invites others to join in future initiatives that uphold human dignity and foster hope.
