Casa Gironda is a home located in Valletta. In Malta, young men and women who have spent most of their entire childhood in state or church-run institutional care facilities must move out once they reach the age of 18. Some of these young men and women move back with their respective parents or relatives, but this is not an option for many. Casa Gironda’s concept was to offer a safe and affordable place for these youths to live. The home is under the management of Agenzija Appogg. Formally known as the Agency for the Welfare of Asylum Seekers, Agenzija Appogg is a government agency in Malta that supports and assists asylum seekers, migrants, and vulnerable individuals or families. The agency provides services to enhance social inclusion, safeguard individuals’ well-being and rights, and promote integration within Maltese society. The home is divided into eight independent apartments accommodating 2, 3, or 4 guests. These apartments are all equipped with a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and all the comforts one expects to find in a modern home. Rotary Club La Valette’s contribution to this project was the purchase of furniture, all the washing machines, tumble dryers, fridges, TVs, electric kettles, microwaves, toasters, etc., together with all other items needed in a home, such as pots, pans, cutlery, plates, glasses, bedding, towels, carpets, curtains, etc. Friends of our Club donated various cared for furniture items such as bedrooms and sofas, which were upcycled and given a new lease of life. Casa Gironda welcomed its first residents in June 2023.
