Rotary Club La Valette's latest Global Grant brings lasting impact to one of Malta's most vital social services. Focused on supporting vulnerable mothers and their newborns, the project combines essential refurbishment with specialist training, ensuring safer care, stronger support systems, and a more sustainable future for those in need.

Rotary Club La Valette has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to community impact through the launch of Global Grant GG2691424, a humanitarian initiative focused on strengthening support for vulnerable mothers and their children in Malta. At the heart of this project lies Dar Tgħanniqa ta’ Omm, a unique residential Home offering shelter and care to pregnant women and new mothers facing homelessness.

This facility, managed by Lifeline Network Malta, provides a safe, structured environment where up to eight women and their children can rebuild their lives. Residents receive counselling, therapy, and practical support aimed at long-term reintegration into society. For many, this Home represents stability at a moment of profound vulnerability.

The Global Grant project addresses two pressing needs identified through a detailed community assessment conducted in collaboration with national social welfare agencies and residents themselves. First, it focuses on essential refurbishment and equipment replacement. Key upgrades include repairing critical infrastructure, such as a leaking bathroom, improving bedroom storage, and installing industrial-grade appliances, including washing machines, dryers, and refrigeration units. These improvements are not cosmetic; they are necessary to ensure the Home meets national licensing standards and can continue operating without interruption.

Equally important is the second pillar of the project: capacity building. The assessment revealed clear gaps in trauma-informed care, safeguarding, and case management. To address this, the grant includes a structured training programme for management and staff, focusing on conflict management, emotional support, and professional resilience. This investment in people ensures that the Home is not only compliant but also equipped to deliver consistent, high-quality care in complex situations.

With a total project value exceeding 40,000 USD, the initiative is supported by a partnership between Rotary Club La Valette and Rotary Club Damme, along with district and World Fund contributions. Rotary Club La Valette serves as the host sponsor, managing funds and overseeing implementation, while international partners contribute both financially and through shared expertise.

What stands out in this project is its long-term vision. Beyond immediate improvements, it ensures sustainability through ongoing maintenance structures, government support mechanisms, and continued oversight by Lifeline management. The result is a stronger, more resilient support system for mothers and children who need it most.

This Global Grant reflects Rotary’s enduring belief that real change happens when practical action meets genuine compassion. By investing in both infrastructure and human capacity, Rotary Club La Valette is helping to secure not just a shelter, but a future filled with dignity, stability, and hope.
