Rotarian Dr Edward Fenech Presents Update on Rotary La Valette’s Long Standing India Project

Rotarian Dr Edward Fenech delivered a comprehensive and heartfelt update on Rotary La Valette’s 21-year humanitarian commitment in Tamil Nadu, South India—one of the Club’s longest and most impactful international service initiatives. The project began in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the deadliest natural disaster in recorded history, which first brought Rotary La Valette to the region. What started as an emergency response evolved into a sustained, multi‑dimensional development programme that continues to transform lives today.

Edward traced the project’s trajectory from its earliest days, beginning with the construction of two homes for orphaned children, followed by the development of a full CBSE-accredited school that now educates hundreds of students. Over the years, Rotary La Valette has supported extensive improvements to the children’s living conditions, including the conversion and upgrading of residential facilities, the provision of new beds for the Sisters, and ongoing investments in hygiene, maintenance, and educational infrastructure. As noted in the India Report, recent contributions included “purchase of new school desks and chairs… investment in computer and technical equipment… [and] acquisition of a power washer to improve hygiene”.

Beyond structural development, Edward highlighted the Club’s long‑standing commitment to community welfare and medical support. Rotary La Valette has provided wheelchairs, bicycles, and even a motorbike to families in need, enabling mobility, access to work, and independence. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Club organised food distribution to extremely vulnerable families, ensuring continuity of care during a period of severe hardship.

The project’s reach extends well beyond the children’s homes. As the report states, Rotary La Valette continues to support “individuals with mental and physical disabilities… extremely vulnerable families living in poverty… [and] a blind community in the region”. A recent eye screening initiative, organised with local partners, provided examinations and reading glasses to nearly 40 individuals, with further care arranged for those requiring specialised treatment.

Edward concluded his talk by reflecting on his personal involvement in the Learning Difficulties Programme, particularly his work on dyslexia. Each year, in collaboration with the University of Malta, lectures are delivered locally to build knowledge and long-term educational support—an initiative described in the report as helping “to build local knowledge and long-term educational support”.

He closed with a reminder that the project’s greatest impact is often felt in small, human moments—such as the simple gifts offered by two young girls during a past visit, gestures that “came entirely from the heart” and symbolised the deep connection between Rotary La Valette and the community it serves.
