Tancredi explaining the various types of aircraft

Rotary Club La Valette gathered on 12 May for a fellowship evening that opened with a heartfelt tribute to the late Rotarian Bryan Sullivan. Fellow Rotarian Tancredi Vella then delivered an engaging talk, “The View from Above,” offering members an accessible and fascinating journey through the world of aviation.

he evening opened on a heartfelt note as President Clare Vassallo invited members to pause in memory of Rotarian Bryan Sullivan, who passed away last week. Clare paid tribute to Bryan’s dedicated service, warm spirit, and unwavering commitment to Rotary values. Members were encouraged to share their personal stories and memories, creating a touching moment of fellowship that honoured Bryan’s legacy within the Club.

Following this reflection, the meeting turned to an engaging and insightful Fellowship Talk delivered by fellow Rotarian Tancredi Vella, titled “The View from Above: Aviation, Pilots and Aircraft.” Tancredi offered members a broad yet accessible journey into the world of aviation, blending technical knowledge with historical context and a touch of Maltese pride.

Tancredi began by demystifying the many roles that keep the aviation ecosystem functioning smoothly. Beyond pilots and cabin crew, he highlighted the essential work of aircraft mechanics, air traffic controllers, dispatchers, and ground operations teams. He also explained the importance of regulatory bodies such as Transport Malta, EASA, and ICAO, whose oversight ensures global safety and standardisation.

Members were then guided through the fundamentals of flight—how aircraft stay in the air, the purpose of key components such as wings, flaps, and engines, and the differences between aircraft types. Tancredi also outlined the pathway to becoming a pilot, from the academic requirements and licensing stages to the diverse career opportunities available in commercial, cargo, private, and specialised aviation.

The talk continued with an overview of airport operations, including runways, taxiways, terminals, and the complex choreography required to move aircraft and passengers efficiently. Tancredi traced the evolution of commercial aviation, from early pioneering flights to today’s interconnected global network.

A particularly engaging section focused on Malta’s aviation history, from its strategic wartime role to the development of Air Malta and the island’s growing aviation services sector. Tancredi emphasised how Malta continues to punch above its weight in training, maintenance, and regulatory leadership.

He concluded by exploring the relationship between aviation and Rotary, noting the existence of aviation‑focused Rotary clubs and international initiatives that use aviation to support humanitarian work.

The evening combined fellowship, learning, and remembrance—an occasion that honoured our past while inspiring curiosity about the world above us.
